It's funny cus it's true

  • Sep. 17th, 2008 at 2:05 PM

I saw this posted on somebody's blog that i check out, and while it's not a particularly funny one in my opinion, this exact thing happened to me a few days ago. I wanted to bring my hunter along when we killed Illidan this week because i kneeeew we were due for a Black Bow of the Betrayer, i had a gut feeling. Where my story departs from the comic (apart from that bow being made up, shooting witches might be a little ridiculous), is that i was attending with my paladin, so it was all the more painful being there to watch it going to waste. We didn't even give it to anyone for novelty value, had to destroy it, bleh. I'm glad to be a lot less involved with the game nowadays, this kind of thing would have bugged me for days just a few months back, now my only gripe is that it wasn't useful to anybody.

Oh well, new week, another chance to kill him and see what shiny loot we can claim. I probably won't be going unless i get called in because they really need me. It's kind of fun being 'on call' and only logging in when the guys can't get by without me, nice to feel needed. I feel a bit like Bruce Wayne, except my bat signal is just being poked on MSN.

Lost & Found

I had a fun afternoon yesterday going through my cupboard and the boxes under my bed. It was like opening a time capsule, some of the stuff had gone untouched for that long. Since we last moved I'd all but forgotten i owned so much crap, because i keep a much tidier and clutter-free room than i used to have. I started to realise that's largely because most of what i own is *still* packed away in the same boxes i used when moving, and a lot of this stuff i uncovered was antique and long forgotten even then. (We moved over 3 years ago). I'm such a hoarder

I could make a great big post with pictures about some of the 'exciting' finds but that can wait. The most random thing i found was a promotional coke bottle wrapper i could use to claim 22p off my next bottle- which expired in 1998! I kept this, it seems, because it has TIE Fighters on it, so it was probably a tie-in from when the original trilogy was digitally re-mastered and had a cinematic re-release. I remember keeping a KFC drink cup around the same time and used it as my stationary holder for a while, up until i started using my current one. As it happens, that is a Star Wars mug i originally bought at Euro-Disney when i was like... 14 or something. It eventually developed a crack so i couldn't drink out of it anymore and i couldn't bear to throw it away, hence stationary holder! I just had a closer look and it now also doubles as a dead bug holder. Eww.

Anyway, back on track. I started this particular endeavor because a few things had come to mind recently that i'd really like to find. Usually i'll think of something but not want to go to the trouble for a single trivial item. With a few things i now wanted, i decided the trouble was now worth it (and mainly i think i was just dead bored)

Most importantly i wanted to find all the cables and stuffs for my Playstation 2 so that i could play the games Mike let me borrow after the weekend i spent there. I had awesome fun btw but i won't blog about that because 4 guys spending a weekend in the same room, playing games and watching videos doesn't translate too well on paper. It's fun that's better experienced than read about.

Other things i wanted to find included my older and seldom-used part of my CD collection. I unpacked everything i figured i might want to listen to and i keep those in a drawer now, the rest i left boxed away until now. Initially i wanted to just rip them all onto my PC so i could re-box them but i've gotten hooked on listening through them right now, so i've left them all out in a nice big stack that'll take me weeks to listen too, but it will be a fun ride of sorts- there's lots of vivid memories associated with hearing some of this music, and scrobbling all this stuff will make my last.fm profile look that bit more colourful and varied. I'm anxious to see where my OMI (Open Mind Index) will lie when it gets recalculated for the start of the next month. I've always had it at the very high end of the scale but it'll be interesting to see if i can actually cap it, within the means of my collection (not having to forcibly listen to junk like rap or something.. gah). At the very least my pie chart will look more unusual than ever. (Japanese music no longer dominating my playlists, hoorah- well i already had it cut right down this month apparently). Hmm i'm going to try and re-skin it and see if i can post it on here, while i'm thinking about it.

Oh and the final thing i wanted to locate was my Facehugger Plushie of Awesomeness! (Seriously, i can't imagine a better plushie). I've had my Darth Maul plushie sitting on my desk for ages, but he gets filthy, dust settles in all the pleats of his wee little dress robe, so i've been wanting to clean him up and store him away- only my desk is kinda empty and sterile these days (if layered with dust can still count as sterile), so i needed a replacement, and i could think of none better. 'Cuddles' the Facehugger now looks quite at home perched on the resin human-terminator skull Simon gave me has a gift from his vacation a few weeks ago, and is the only other bit of decoration i have.

The soundtrack to this post has been Absolution and Origin of Symmetry (Yeah i'm so slow and scattered i fit 2 albums in while doing this :-P), in a futile attempt to determine which is the greater album and thus deserving the 'Muse' spot in my Top 10 list i'm compiling... but it just can't be done lol. I'd include both but Muse cheat by being nigh godly. To make a comparison (and tangent into SW territory, because i just haven't done it enough for one day!) It's kinda like with Star Wars fanboys and trying to weigh the movies against other movies (this rule holds true for myself, my mum, and some people i know, at the least). If asked to put them in order, that's usually easy enough, fans all have their favorites, but difficulties arise when trying to quantify your appreciation for them such that they can be compared to regular movies. I love them all unconditionally as any true SW fanboy should (even if my fanboyism for SW is significantly diminished since the prequels), and that can't really be compared to how much i love other movies. If i was forced to they'd be automatically 1,2 and 3 on my list list, based on how much i feel about them, and could stand to re-watch them etc. and that's just unfair, particularly so because it's 3 films and occupying 3 spots in any given list. So, i keep my love for SW and my love for movies separate, and i know other fans to consider them in a similar way.

Where was i going with that? Ah, yes... It's a similar thing i'm feeling now trying to compile this little list (which i'm doing for no particular reason, if you're wondering), without the constraint of only considering one album per artist, i'd find the 10 spots occupied by only 3, maybe 4 bands. My favorite album for anyone else has been simple enough to decide though. Just Muse being too darn consistently amazing to decide.

To close, today's song is the most brilliant thing i've heard in weeks. Looking it up revealed plenty of comments along the lines of 'best thing of 2007' so i'm having to wonder where was i in 2007 and why am i only hearing this now?

I love XKCD. This is my latest reason to love XKCD.

PS. I'll only be using LJ's own 'Music:' field in the event that last.fm doesn't play whatever i'm listening to.

Project Firefly

Ok, i need to take a little moment to explain that i wrote up a brief mission statement for what i intend to do with this journal, and featuring prominently in the DO NOT column is 'writing anything about world of warcraft, write nothing, you can do this!'. Now, if i'd actually posted the mission statement (D'oh) then i would have made it to the 4th entry before breaking that, as it stands this is only the third entry, but dammit, i just don't have anything else worth saying today lol. This may become a recurring theme but i'm sure as hell going to try and avoid it as much as i can, even if i have to take to interviewing random people on the street to get something interesting to write (that wouldn't be a bad idea actually...).

So here goes, i'm recommencing my crusade against the wildlife of Zangarmash. Yes! i shall aquire for myself a Firefly mini-pet, oh yes i will! Really this time!

I ought to elaborate about this because 100% of my current readership (Hi Laura!) doesn't know anything about World of Warcraft and probably thought i was going to write about Firefly the show. Well that would be half correct, because the pet in the game alludes to the show and it's for this subtle reference that i'm trying to collect one. That Firefly was canceled ranks as one of the greatest crimes against television in my humble opinion, so i want a firefly as my lasting tribute. I made it my mission to get one a few months ago, and spent the greater part of a weekend doing nothing else but killing the necessary creatures until i found the pet on one of them. The item is supposedly a 1 in 1500 drop, making it retarded-ly rare, but i wanted to sweat and slave for it, partly because that's the usual mind set of other pet collectors (it's not worth having if it came easy), and partly because i felt Firefly deserved the effort, much of my tribute would actually be this effort that went into it. I could just have bought one but as i mentioned that kind of defeats the purpose, however i eventually decided to buy the one i'd seen up for auction and give it to my hunter, to keep him company and motivate me on this long and lonely quest (The one i wanted was for my paladin, who's too much of a pussy to do this task herself). 2300 slain and i had to give up, and i haven't tried again since.

Now i'm diving in again with renewed vigor and enthusiasm! Kinda.. i'm only going to be doing it in small doses now because i just don't have the time. The point is i now have a good reason for this kind of a mindless task because i need to level my hunter's new pet (combat pet, not to be mistaken with the class of novelty mini-pets to which the firefly belongs) and this struck me as the ideal task to use to do that. If i don't get it this time, before i'm finished raising my pet, i don't know if i will continue with the mission or not. So fingers crossed. I estimate i'll have killed around 3500 by then, more than enough for a fair chance, but going on past experience i usually find myself far far over the odds for anything like this. Mr. Pinchy took me months of fishing to find.

Also while i'm doing this, i'm trying to decide on a name for my new wind serpent pet, i want to have decided on one by the time i've leveled it to 70 and i'm ready to start using it seriously in raids. I could have tamed a readily 70 one, but they're blue and ugly so i spent a few nights stalking my lovely rare white one earlier in the week, it looks far better than the ones all the other hunters use so it's well worth the effort. Looks are everything after all! when it comes to this kind of thing at least :P
I was thinking of naming him/her Serenity (yay more tributes) but i dunno. Something Firefly related at least would be cool. Pet naming has always been important to me and all my pets have had frikkin' awesome names. My pet cat was even better known than me at one point. I'm open to suggestions for my wind serpent anyway, would be nice to get some creative input. To describe it, it's a winged white snake that flaps around mostly upright and trails the end of it's tail along the ground, aaaand it has lightning breath. Actually, i'm taking a screenshot.

In other news, I'm going to see Mike tomorrow, wooo. i haven't made time to visit and hang out with him since we went to see Nightwish together in March.. or April, and before that it was probably before Christmas, so very long overdue!. I can't wait, we always have a blast. I often wished we lived a little closer because i'd probably spend tons more time there. I should have something meaningful to report when i am back from that, at some point this weekend :)

Ohh, nearly forgot something,

A sense of profound irony

I updated my Firefox browser to version 3 a few days ago, and i chanced upon the fire.fm plugin for it while i was on the website, which is a fully featured in-browser version of the Last.fm player application. It's totally renewed my interest in using last.fm for discovering new music again. It came just at the right time because i've been stuck in the habit of just listening to the same few albums from my collection most of the time, and the lack of variety makes me feel boring (though i never actually bore of the bands i tend to over-play).

If variety is the spice of life, my spice rack could be said to only contain salt and pepper!... Well, no that's quite accurate, my 'spice rack' is actually quite extensive, but i usually just reach for the salt and pepper because everything else is hidden behind them, and i'm lazy like that.

So onto the point of the post, i've been using it a fair bit over the last few days to try and discover some new metal bands i might think are interesting enough to listen to more in depth, and i tagged quite a few good tracks that stood out to me, and then started going through the list of tagged tracks to check out some of the bands. As i might have expected, quite a few of the songs i'd liked enough to tag belonged to some of the same bands. Bleeding Through, Versailles and myGrain were some of them. Three other songs i tagged were attributed to the band Cerberus, and when i went to look them up i noticed an interesting fact about them in thier...
biography entry )

My first thought was of annoyance, that i'd have to figure out which of the bands claiming the name Cerberus was responsible for the music that i liked. After a little further investigation i discovered that each of the 3 bands was responsible for one of the 3 songs, and apart from being quite an amazing coincidence is deeply ironic considering what the bands' namesake is. Pretty far out huh? I love little uncanny coincidences like this.

How did i get to Accident & Emergency?

"A&E"

It's a blue, bright blue Saturday, hey hey
And the pain's starting to slip away, hey hey

I'm in a backless dress on a pastel ward that's shining
Think I want you still
But there may be pills at work

Do you really wanna know how I was dancing on the floor?
I was trying to phone you as I'm crawling out the door
I'm amazed at you, the things you say and that you don't do
Why don't you ring?

I was feeling lonely, feeling blue
Feeling like I needed you
Like I'm waking up surrounded by me
A&E

It's a blue, bright blue Saturday, hey hey
And the pain's starting to slip away, hey hey

I'm in a backless dress on a pastel ward that's shining
They gotta watch you still
But there may be pills at work

How did I get to accident and emergency?
All I wanted was you to take me out high
And I was feeling lonely, feeling blue
Feeling like I needed you
Like I hoped you'd call and hoped you'd see me
